Independence Day Underwater

Indonesia has broken the world record. This morning, more than 2818 people stayed underwater to do the record breaking: the most scuba diving. This event took place in Bunaken, North Sumatra. The divers, coming from various provinces across Indonesia as well as overseas, do a ceremony in the commemoration of Indonesia's Independence Day, August 17.

They stayed underwater for at least 25 minutes. The representative of Guiness Book of Records witnessed and joined the ceremony in the Bunaken waters.

"Divers began entering the water at 8 in the morning. By midday, all of them had returned to the shore," said Koesdiantoro, one of the Sail Bunaken 2009 committee.

The previous record of the most scuba diving is 958 people, done by Madrid.
